
WHAT IS MUSIC?
This major is part of the Fine Arts and Design Exploration Group
The Department of Music offers a variety of undergraduate degrees. Whether you are preparing for a career as a performer or educator or you simply want to learn more about music, the Department of Music has a degree for you.
Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts with a major in music*
- Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Music History
- Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Jazz Studies
*The Bachelor of Arts with a major in music allows students to pursue their love of music [their desire to study music]and at the same time pursue other academic interests, including majors or minors in other departments and programs within the University.

HOW TO DECLARE:
AUDITION. Auditions are typically held twice a year (once in December for spring admission and several dates in early spring for fall admission). Audition requirements can be found here. You can schedule an audition here.

Typical courses for a first semester music major would include classes such as Class Instruction in Piano, Ear Training and Musicianship 1 and Harmony 1. However, you must contact the department for permission to add these courses.

COMMON CAREER PATHS:
UConn students who major in Music often pursue careers as professional musicians or music educators. Common examples include but are not limited to careers in:

- Composing
- Conducting

- Music directing

COMMON AREAS OF GRADUATE STUDY:
Music majors who go on to pursue graduate studies pursue a wide variety of master’s, doctoral, and/or professional degrees based on their interests. Common examples include but are not limited to degrees in:
